Strong Holiday Weekend for Retailers as Black Friday’s Explosive Growth Outpaces Cyber Monday

ATLANTA, GA – December 1, 2010 – U.S. consumers spent 90% more online on Black Friday this year compared with Black Friday 2009. While online sales were also up on Cyber Monday YoY, consumers spent 14% less online on Cyber Monday vs. Black Friday this year, proving that Black Friday is still the busiest shopping day of the year, even online.

These findings come from a report released today by SearchIgnite, a leading provider of performance marketing technology and services, managing more than $1 billion in media for some of the world’s largest advertisers and agencies, including Chico’s, La Quinta, E*TRADE and more.

Other notable findings in the report include:

  • Average Order Values up on Black Friday: In another sign that consumer confidence is back, consumers spent 24% more per online transaction on Black Friday YoY.
  • Retailers Increase Search Spend to Capture Growth in Online Shopping: To heavily promote the kickoff of the Holiday Shopping season and Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, and to capture more consumer dollars in the competitive retail environment, U.S. retailers increased spend on paid search advertising 47% YoY.
